Winter Proteas Michael July 13, 2015 News The proteas and ericas are in full bloom in the winter months and make a grand show. We have the Protea obtusifolia or limestone sugarbush which belongs to the Proteaceae family, a hugely diverse group of plants well-known in South Africa for their bright, showy flower heads. There are both red and white varieties. The Erica coccinea is also prolific during the winter and forms a cheerful display. Our staff, supported by 2 temporary workers, are busy removing rooikrans during the period of low snake activity. There is more traffic than usual in the Reserve as building work is ongoing on 2 houses.
